Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

The medical formula Botox comes from is a naturally occurring bacteria that produces a neurotoxin.

Botox is well-known for its ability to treat fine lines and wrinkles. When injected into your facial muscles during anti-aging treatments, the muscles relax, resulting in a smoother complexion.

In addition to its ability to help improve your appearance aesthetically, Botox can also be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including vaginal discomfort. The way Botox works to treat wrinkles can also target muscle pain in the vagina.

How does Botox treat vaginal discomfort?

Often, vaginal discomfort stems directly from painful muscle contractions. This is especially true if you suffer from vaginismus, a chronic condition that causes the vaginal muscles to tighten during penetration.

For women with vaginismus or similar conditions, sex can feel extremely painful. Many women experience soreness and tightness in their vagina during intercourse, making it difficult to enjoy.

To relieve your pain, your provider at OB/GYN Specialists injects Botox into the vaginal muscles. Injecting Botox directly into the muscle gradually blocks the pain signals from your nerve roots, so your vaginal muscles can relax.

Most women only need one Botox injection to experience lasting relief from pain. As with wrinkles, the medication gradually subsides over the course of three to six months. If you continue to feel pain after the initial injection, you can return to OB/GYN Specialists for maintenance shots.

What can I expect during my Botox treatment?

The length and results of your Botox treatment vary depending on your unique circumstances. During your consultation, your provider reviews your condition and desired goals before outlining your Botox strategy and the number of treatments that are recommended to achieve and maintain optimal results.

Anti-aging treatments to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles usually take a matter of minutes. Following your appointment, you can expect to see results within a week, and they typically last between three to six months.

Botox treatments for vaginismus, or other conditions that cause vaginal pain and discomfort, may take 20 minutes or longer.

Regardless of why you’re getting Botox treatment, injections are typically delivered using a small needle, so discomfort is minimal.
